HANAYORI DANGO VERSIONS

This blog is about my analysis about the versions of the famous manga, “Hana Yori Dango”: Meteor Garden (Taiwan), Hana Yori Dango Jdorama (Japan), Boys Over Flowers (Korea), and Meteor Rain (The New Meteor Garden Version of Mainland, China).

1. Meteor Garden (Taiwan)

Meteor Garden was a big hit, not only in the Philippines, but also all over Asia. It started the career of four unknown actors turned into a famous boyband called F4; composed of Jerry (Yan Cheng Xu), Vic (Zhou You Min), Ken (Zhu Xiao Tian) and Vanness (Wu Jian Hao), whom are now called JVKV.

Meteor Garden is the first live series version of the famous manga Hana Yori Dango.

The first season was really phenomenal especially in the Philippines (abs-cbn) because it is the first time Filipino people watched a love story wherein the bully wins the heart of the leading lady. In addition to that, the love triangle among the three main cast (Dao Ming Si-Shancai-Hua Ze Lei) turned out to be unpredictable because of the kilig factor and chemistry which the leading lady had for the two guys. The story wins the heart of the youth because of its modern setting and real-life dialogues of the characters. The audience finds it cute that the rich and famous handsone bully of a high-end university is head over hills with a simple middle-class girl. As far as I know, this is the first love story which started to bloom because of a strong punch. The actors fit their role and they seem to love what they are doing. Another factor that makes this series successful in abs-cbn is the way the series was dubbed in Filipino. The chosen dubbers for each character suit their role, their attractive voices added to the kilig factor of the story. The way they dubbed seems to be they are as excited as the real actors in the drama.

On the other hand, the second season is the opposite of the first one. The entire series, except the first and last three episodes, shows Dao Ming Si not recognizing Shancai because of his amnesia. The audience didn’t like the idea of having the female lead pursuing the male lead who falls in love with another woman. And the only time they reconcile is on the last episode. Although they showed Dao Ming Si talking to Shancai on one episode after regaining his memory, it’s still disappointing because the female lead is confused then. During that time, Lei is starting to fall for Shancai. They even kissed in one episode. The finale of this story at the church didn’t meet the expectations of the audience. It would have been better if they end up getting married in the church and not just kissing in the church. In addition to that, the actors seem to be bored in what they are doing, it is also the same case with the way the dubbers dubbed the story. The dubbing is still great but I noticed that Shancai’s voice was not as lovely as the first one. Well, maybe it’s because the second season shows Shancai always crying.

The setting was in college, although the original story of the manga is in highschool. This is quite good for the Filipino audience because this kind of situations may exist in Filipino college students but not in highschool.

Having fresh new faces as the main casts is a good idea for the production of Meteor Garden in order to catch attention. On the other hand, the handsome faces is not enough, the actors in this series are not that good in acting. Although their appearance fit their role, if you compare it to the other dramas, the cute expression of Dao Ming Si when he is angry turned out to be over reacting.

2. Hana Yori Dango Jdorama (Japan)

Although Meteor Garden has always been my favorite, for me, the Japanese version was the best adaptation of the manga. The story met the expectations of the audience in the first and second season. They even made a movie for the finale. One of the opposite things the Japanese version did from the Taiwanese version is the male lead’s amnesia in the second season. In MG, the male lead suffered from amnesia almost in the entire story, while in HYD, the male lead suffered from amnesia in the last episode but he regained his memory after a few days.

The actors in this story seemed to be more excited on what they are doing and they are even more excited in the second season, which is the opposite thing for the previous Taiwanese version. What I mean for excited is the way they act and love their role. The movie is enough proof that the people behind this series are giving their best to make the story much better. In addition to that, the dubbing quality in GMA has improved, making the drama more appealing to its audience. The good thing about the Jdorama of HYD is they got married in the finale (movie).

The setting was in highschool, following the original story of the manga.

The actors here are already known and they act better. The only problem is the uneven exposure of the 4 members of F4, which is the opposite of the Taiwanese version. The male lead is not as fierce-looking as Taiwan’s DaoMingSi. I find Matsumoto Jun too small for his role. The Japanese F4 seem to be more afraid of Rui(Lei) than Tsukasa(DaoMingSi). However, Oguri Shin as Rui is too tall for the other F4 guys.

The character of Sakurako (Lizhen of MG) is really challenging for the actress Megumo Sato, she is gorgeous and she portrays her character’s multiple personality well. (Charming but tactful friend, fierce enemy and obsessive lover)

Unfortunately, this series did not gain its popularity in the Philippines. Maybe, it’s because every fan already have DVDs and GMA did not pay much attention in its promotion on TV.

3. Boys Over Flowers (Korea) – airing

I’ve just finished watching this series and I find the male lead as the most handsome DaoMingSi/Tsukasa. This is the same thing with the other members of F4, except for the character of Lei/Rui, he is not that handsome but he portrays his role well. Actually, his character is supposed to be the most handsome member of F4.

On the other hand, the female lead is not the cutest Shancai. She is the only Shancai without braids because she has a short hair. I like the idea of having the female lead in more tomboyish look compared to the first 2 versions, because it is what her role should be but she appears to be acting too stupid for her role. (In real life, she is intelligent, she even published a book)

The setting was in highschool too, though many fans suggest they should have made it in a college setting. Anyway, I like the twist in this story. The different scenes and dialogues in Meteor Garden and Hanayori Dango Jdorama are well-combined into one scene. But my favorite is the spinning back kick, instead of punching (MG) or jumping before punching (HYD), Geum Jan Di (Shancai/Tsukushi of BOF) had a spinning back kick to knock down Goo Joon Pyo (DaoMingSi/Tsukasa of BOF). The only problem is the confusing and inconsistent flow of the story. In addition to that, I noticed in this series that Lee Min Ho is obviously attracted to other women, I don’t like it, and it’s not supposed to be his character as Gu Jun Pyo(DaoMingSi/Tsukasa). (Observe how he looks at the sexy girls in New Caledonia). It’s like If I were there, I want to tell him “Hey! You’re not supposed to flirt with other girls”

To all the fans of SS501’s Kim Hyun Joong, forgive me, I really don’t think he’s handsome, though my friends find him cute and they even say he looks like a girl. Me and my sister were surprised when we discovered that we’re the only fans who don’t think he’s handsome. Well, after I watched the whole series, I realized he’s cute and he’s good in acting though I find his actions too feminine sometimes. (Just watch BOF and observe how he sails during their stay in New Caledonia).

I also had a chance to watch an SS501 music video. He looks hot. I think he just looks ugly in BOF because of his dyed straight hair.

About the girl, Goo Hye Sun, her skin is perfect but her facial expression is annoying. And I think she really needs make up for her face to look younger. (Goo Hye Sun does not put make because she thinks she don’t need it since her beautiful skin makes her look younger, and if she does she do it herself which is kinda weird for an actress). Though her role is not concerned with her looks, she should have been younger looking since her partner looks so young and it is obvious he's younger, my God, LeeMin Ho is only 21, while Goo Hye Sun is 24.

Her acting and facial expression reminds me of S.E.S.’s Eugene (“3 Dads with one mom”, she appeared in many dramas, but that’s her only latest drama I know which is also familiar to everyone). They both have the most overacting expressions among the other Korean actress who are already OA, well that is my opinion. Though, Eugene is obviously prettier, she(Eugene) also have some similarities with Sandara Park (Dara of 2NE1) – Watch Eugene in her younger days on “Loving You” and see how she resembles Sandy.

4. Let's Go Watch Meteor Shower Together (China) – airing

I haven't watched this version but the leading lady is very cute. She has similarities with Barbie Hsu.

5. Garden of Love (Philippines) – not confirmed

This is not confirmed yet but there are rumors that the Philippines will be the 5th Asian country to have its own version of Hana Yori Dango. I don’t think it will work if they follow the original setting of the manga in highschool. It just not suits the Philippines’ culture. They should make it in college if ever it push through.
